How to Size an Antler Chew for Your Dog (So It Actually Lasts)

by Mark Hofer on Aug 08, 2026
How to Size an Antler Chew for Your Dog (So It Actually Lasts)

The single biggest reason an antler chew disappears in two days instead of two months? Wrong size. Sizing an antler isn't just about your dog's breed or weight  it's about how they chew. Here's how to get it right the first time.

Start With Chew Style, Not Just Size

Two dogs of the same weight can go through an antler at completely different speeds. Before you look at weight charts, ask yourself honestly: is your dog a light nibbler, a steady moderate chewer, or the kind of dog that treats every chew like a deadline?

  • Light chewers  dogs who enjoy a chew occasionally and don't apply much pressure. A Small size, in either moose or elk, is usually plenty.
  • Moderate chewers  dogs who chew regularly but don't destroy things in one sitting. A Medium antler is the balanced choice here.
  • Strong chewers dogs who go through toys and treats fast. Go Large, and consider moose antler specifically for its extra density.

When in Doubt, Size Up

If you're stuck between two sizes, size up. A larger antler simply gives your dog more material to work through, which means more chew time and better value  even if it looks a little big at first. An oversized antler is inconvenient; an undersized one is a choking hazard once it's worn down.

Match the Antler to the Dog, Not the Label

This is also where moose vs. elk and whole vs. split come in. A strong chewer with a Small elk antler will burn through it fast  the same dog with a Large moose antler will be occupied for weeks. Size, density, and cut all work together, not separately.

A Quick Gut-Check

If your dog can get the whole antler in their mouth and apply their full bite force to it in one go, it's too small. You want a piece large enough that they're working the ends, not swallowing them.

Use our interactive size guide to find the right antler for your dog's exact chew style  whether that's light, moderate, or strong.
