Whole vs. Split Antlers: What's the Difference (and Does It Matter)?

Whole vs. Split Antlers: What's the Difference (and Does It Matter)?

Whole or split  it's one of the first questions new customers ask us, and it's a fair one. The two cuts look different, chew different, and suit slightly different kinds of dogs. Here's how to tell them apart.

Whole Antlers: The Classic, Slow-Burn Chew

A whole antler is exactly what it sounds like the antler in its natural, uncut form. Dogs gnaw the outer surface first, working their way down gradually over weeks or even months. Because there's no exposed marrow to reach quickly, whole antlers tend to last the longest of any cut we offer.

Good for: dogs who enjoy a slow, steady chewing session, and owners who want maximum chew time per antler.

Split Antlers: Faster Access, Extra Reward

A split antler is cut lengthwise, exposing the marrow running through the centre. This gives dogs quicker access to the softer, more flavourful interior  which is exactly why split cuts are so popular with dogs who lose interest in a chew if they can't feel like they're "getting somewhere." It's a bit like the difference between a slow-cooked bone and one that's already cracked open.

Good for: dogs who prefer instant engagement, and puppies or lighter chewers who benefit from an easier starting point.

Neither Cut Is "Better"  They're Just Different Tools

We get asked a lot which one is the "premium" option, and honestly, neither is. A whole antler simply spreads the chewing experience over a longer stretch of time, while a split antler front-loads the reward. Some owners keep one of each on hand and rotate between them depending on the day.

Both cuts come from the same wild-shed, Grade-A elk antlers, hand-finished the same way  smooth edges, no splinters, nothing added.

Still deciding? Our size guide breaks both cuts down by chew strength, so you can match the antler to your dog, not just the shape.
